The flamenco duo Murtola & Widenius is a joint project of two Finnish flamenco musicians, Anna Murtola and Joonas Widenius. Murtola (1983, Oulu) and Widenius (1980, Tornio) have worked together in several different ensembles since the early 2000s. Their long musical journey has refined the typical communication of flamenco into a tight, dynamic performance with an expressive interpretation.
Both musicians are also recording artists with their own solo projects and developers of their own Nordic flamenco sound, which is also reflected in the duo’s repertoire. On the flamenco duo’s album, northern melancholia meets flamenco’s intense rhythms, and its deepest styles are balanced by influences from Finnish folk traditions. The album, titled Estrella del Norte, will be released on February 7, 2025, and translates to The North Star in English.
